Everyone that has gone to a synagogue service knows the scene, the moment when the Torah is carried from the Bimah to the congregation to be touched. It is the visual equivalent to the spiritual quest. I did not want to paint fifty-one portraits but to create a gallery of emotions, a modern, vibrant, holy convocation reaching out with prayer books, prayer shawls, or just a hand, in a tender moment to touch the Torah. Some people show joy and sing, others are more thoughtful, others still show grief or merely the weathering of life's experiences. The stars above signify eternity.
